Old World Barolo or Barbaresco from Piedmont, Italy. And, one of the most impressive is Marchesi di Gresy Camp Gros Martinenga Barbaresco DOCG. Only produced in very high-quality years, the aromatic wine made from Nebbiolo, one of my most favorite varieties, melds together black plum, dried roses, tobacco, and sour cherry. Nebbiolo is a hearty variety, so allowing the wine to open for an hour or two before enjoying is recommended, and it can easily age in the bottle for around 10 years. Typically, Barbaresco is a touch lighter than Barolo, but it is still a rich and robust, and quite delicious, wine. $140
High altitude vineyards of Argentina create wines with character and personality. Colome Old Vine Estate Malbec from vineyards sitting at 6000-10000 feet above sea level, at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, Argentina is structured, balanced and refined. Vineyards, originally planted over 160 years ago, add incredible concentration to the wine, resulting in a wine that tells the story of the land in each sip. $30
I am such a fan of the smoky, spicy, earthy, dense wines of the Rhone Valley. Though many are quite robust and intense, for your everyday sipping a Cote du Rhone blend, traditionally with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, amongst 14 others, is bold enough to pair with anything from a burger to a steak, but can also be enjoyed on its own. Chateau de La Nerth is consistenly one of the best from the region. $30
