Wine of the Day: Palmer & Co. Brut Rose Reserve

Today was supposed to be an exceptional day. I was supposed to be visiting the seventy-year-old Palmer & Co. Champagne House in Champagne for a tasting, a dinner, and stay on their property with my sister and nephew. (Surprise Harrison, I was joining your Paris get-away to take you and Daph to Champagne!!!) Sadly, Covid-19 hit, the world stopped, along with any hopes of traveling abroad internationally for a while.

As I can’t be there in person, I am toasting with one of my favorites from the Maison (winery.) Located in the heart of premium Champagne, Palmer & Co was created by seven well-established grower-families with Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims. Starting from an idea in the late 1940s, and turning into a reality when they purchased the cellar of a Reims Champagne house. The Maison quickly drew recognition for their house style, displaying a delicate, elegant, finessed level of quality.

Today, working with 350 growers in the area, the Maison crafts gorgeous sparklers from limestone filled Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier vineyards. With a blend of 40-45% Chardonnay and Pinot Noir each, with the remaining percentage of Pinot Meunier, the Palmer & Co Brut Rose Reserve ($80) is balanced, refined and precise. With at least two years of bottle aging on the lees and a portion of the red wine fermented in oak before bottling, the wine opens with fruity-red berry aromas. The flavors that follow reveal strawberry, blueberry, blanched almond, and a bit of spice, with a herbal, savory note that makes this wine distinctive and thoroughly delicious.

June 13 (in addition to being a very special birthday) is also the second Saturday in June, also known as National Rose Day, making it the perfect time to pop this pretty wine and toast life. #Cheers

  1. 13th is a special day and I wish I could be with you to celebrate but know that we are raising a glass just for you. Sad about your trip but glad you are home and safe.

  2. Sweetie – my heart is so sad that this adventure didn’t happen for the three of us. It was beautiful gesture and one that would have been special and received with joy and love. On top of a gorgeous bubble, abundant conversation, gastronomic Michelin prepared food we would have celebrated you in style. This is a rain check my love, for everyone. Cheers and happiest of birthdays to you.
