Wine of the Day: Selvapiana Chianti Rufina

Chianti Rufina is the smallest sub-zone within Tuscany’s Chianti region DOCG, but though it is small it is mighty. Comprising less than 5% of the total production of wine within Chianti, the region celebrates the quality of their wines first and foremost. With close proximity to the Apennines, and location sitting near the Sieve River north of Florence, along with moderate elevations, and soils filled with clay, schist and limestone, capturing much needed water keeping the vineyard hydrated during long, hot, Italian summers, ensures the grapes enjoy an extended growing season, bringing longer ripening fruit with higher acidity.

Almost 200 years ago Selvapiana began producing in the area, employing organic viticulture practices to ensure the true essence of the vineyard and the region shines through in each of their wines. Selvapiana Chianti Rufina ($19)is produced from 95% Sangiovese with just a touch of Canaiolo, Colorino, and Malvasia Nera rounding out the palate and adding texture to the wine. A completely traditional wine, celebrating its history in the glass with ripe red cherry and juicy raspberry, crushed stone, soft herbs like tarragong and mint, with a lovely balance between fresh acidity and firm tannins. This is a perfect everyday wine to pair with pizza or pasta night, grilled chicken or beef, or enjoy on its own after allowing a bit of time in the glass to open up. #Cheers
