Wine of the Day: Canvasback Cabernet Sauvignon

The wines of Washington State are diverse, different, and simply delicious. On the other side of the Cascade Mountains, the terrain features a wide variety of soil types that canvas the Columbia River Valley, Walla Walla, Red Mountain, giving minerality and earthy expression to the fruit, creating depth, texture, and energy to the wines. The Red Mountain AVA, with elevations around 1000 feet above sea level, daytime temperatures climb into the 90s, creating ripe, luscious fruit, falling to around 50 degrees at night, ensuring fruit maintains freshness with concentration and power.

Canvasback Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($42) is a bargain for the quality the wine delivers. Textured and dense, without being overbearing, the wine reveals red and black fruit flavors of cherry, boysenberry, dried fig, and blackberry, mingling with toasted hazelnut, cedar, licorice, and hints of sweet spice like star anise and nutmeg. Balanced and inviting, with a broad, supple palate, and a velvety, lingering finish. A lovely example of the quality Washington wines continues to deliver. #Cheers!

  1. I agree. The wines of Washington State are excellent. At least as good as those of Cali. And they don’t give me the too much sulfite headache.
