Portugal’s classic field blend of grapes that defines great Port wine also creates killer red table wines, as displayed in Prats & Symington Post Scriptum de Chryseia ($27). The second wine of its kind, the baby brother per se, or postscript, to Chryseia, the highly regarded red table wine first crafted in 1999 when the celebrated Port wine house, Symington, partnered with Bruno Prats, former owner of Chateau Cos d’Estournel in Bordeaux.
Shortly after crafting the early vintages of Chryseia the partnership created Post Scriptum in a more everyday drinking style, blending Douro Valley grown 56% Touriga Franca and 33% Touriga Nacional, with Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. Aged one year in French oak helping round out the tannins, taming the power the bold varieties can bring to wine, with the end result being a beautifully finessed, refined wine with character. Fragrant floral and woody herb notes lift from the glass followed by ripe red plum, black cherry, ripe berry, and an earthy, forest floor note. Easy enough for everyday drinking, with a lively freshness. Great with stews or braised dishes, especially as temperatures begin to cool with the season. #Cheers
