When we often think of New Zealand wines, our minds often shift to the zesty, citrus, and gooseberry-infused Sauvignon Blanc. However, the country also does amazing things with cool climate, maritime-influenced Pinot Noir, as displayed in Cloudy Bay’s Te Wahi Pinot Noir.
From Central Otago, on the country’s South Island, Te Wahi means “the place” in the country’s native Māori, highlighting the importance of the terroir on the wine. Bold and fleshy, the luscious red wine opens with layers of blue and red fruits melding with toasted allspice, star anise, forest floor, and dried leaves. The wine is big but balanced and definitely a show-stopper. Enjoy it with barbecue roasted meats. smoked salmon or crispy duck. #Cheers
