7 Spirits to Drink this Fall

We have officially entered the holiday season, and winter is around the corner. To toast cool autumn nights, we suggest including one of these flavorful liquors designed to elevate your cocktail experience, several of which are guaranteed to warm you from the inside out. #Cheers

Let’s face it: any time of year is the right time of year for tequila. It is one of the most popular spirits enjoyed throughout the country, whether it be in a classic margarita,  Ranch Water, Bloody Maria, or sipped neat; Americans are crazy for tequila. We suggest Santo Anejo Tequila for those who love to sip their tequila straight.

The creation of celebrity chef Guy Fierri and rocker Sammy Hagar, with third-generation distiller Juan Eduardo Nunez and tequilera Karina Rojo, the additive-free Anejo is aged at least 2 years in American oak barrels formerly used for whiskey aging. The extensive aging of the 100% Blue Weber agave tequila gives richness to the palate, enhancing the natural spicy floral notes with warm spice, toasted cedar, and dried herbs. Enjoy neat or with a single, slow-melting ice cube and a squeeze of orange.

The growth of mezcal is surging just like tequila, as the agave-based Mexican spirit enjoys a surge in popularity. Bosscal Mezcal focuses on providing an expressive liquor that breathes authenticity. Wild-grown agave is harvested with a focus on environmental sustainability, ensuring the plant has reached optimal ripeness with the preservation of the agave in mind. Bosscal Mezcal is distilled at the family-run distillery in Durango, Mexico creating a 100% organic, artisanal product that represents a sense of place.

Bosscal Mezcal Diamiana has a lovely citrusy freshness that combines with the subtle classic smokiness expected from the spirit. These flavors mingle with fresh herbal notes from the inclusion of the native Damiana flower in the spirit’s second distillation. The herbal notes meld with orange, lemon blossom, and wildflower, and a touch of warm spice, giving it a hint of sweetness.

Cachaça is a sugarcane-based liquor similar to rum and the national spirit of Brazil. It is made exclusively in the country and enjoyed in cocktails, like the signature Brazilian drink, a caipirinha. Though the drink is made in a similar fashion to rum, it is quite different in that rum can be made from sugarcane, molasses, raw sugar, and more. In contrast, cachaça can legally only be made from freshly pressed sugarcane juice.

Novo Fogo elevates the classic floral, fruity, vegetal notes of the cachaça by distilling and aging the spirit in toasted, used American oak barrels for its Novo Fogo Barrel Aged Cachaça. The resulting spirit has notes of allspice and nutmeg, vanilla, and baked banana bread. It is a delicious alternative brown liquor in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned cocktail. Even better, the USDA Certified organic cachaça producer is working to save endangered trees within the Brazilian rainforest with an extensive reforestation program. We love to enjoy a spirit that is caring for Mother Earth.

The Hawaiian word, Kuleana, means having responsibility for something, with the person who is responsible taking care and ownership in a reciprocal relationship for that to which they are responsible. Caring for the land, or Āina, is of utmost importance to the people of Hawaii. Their responsibility is to the island, maintaining its history and traditions. Kuleana Rum is crafted from heirloom Hawaiian sugarcane, known as kō. The sugarcane is grown on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, where Pacific Ocean trade winds blow throughout the day.

Only a small percentage of rum made throughout the world uses fresh sugarcane juice, known as Agricole, making Kuleana Hawaiian Rum Agricole very special. The small batch copper pot distilled spirit has a lively freshness that highlights the purity of the juice, creating cherry, ripe berry, Fuji apple, and lemongrass. There is an earthy, green, herbaceous note on the balanced finish that is smooth enough to enjoy simply with seltzer and lime or mix into classic rum cocktails, like a mojito, daiquiri, or Mai Tai.

One of our favorite cocktails is a tamarind margarita. Tangy, citrusy, and sweet, the drink showcases the sweet and sour notes of the tamarind plant with the floral, spicy, peppery notes of tequila. Casa Don Ramon Tamarind Tequila captures the flavors we love from that margarita in its 100% Blue Agave tequila infused with tamarind. Use it as a base in your favorite margarita or Paloma recipe, or enjoy it over ice with soda and lime.

There is nothing better than a little sunshine to cheer you up when it is cold, rainy, or snowy outside. Thankfully, Sunshine Punch will provide that bit of brightness any time of year. The low-alcohol ready-to-drink cocktail (17% ABV) combines Caribbean rum, vodka, natural citrus flavor, and creme for a creamy, dreamy spirit that reminds us of an Orange Creamsicle. The product was created by two friends in North Carolina; the orange and vanilla flavored drink is easily enjoyed, poured straight from the bottle over ice, or whirl with ice in a blender to create the ultimate frozen adult slushy.

The availability of lower-proof spirit options is growing. Products that are lower in alcohol are perfect for brunch cocktails, evening aperitifs, or throughout the night, as you can enjoy a few drinks and still feel good in the morning. SOMMARØY delivers quality liquors with a lower proof of 55 versus 80, 90, or 100 proof found in traditional liquors. Their products are gluten-free, contain zero carbs, and are only 70 calories per serving. The liquor is named for the Norwegian island where the sun never sets and is available in a clean, crisp Vodka or botanical, herbaceous, aromatic Gin.
