The most romantic day of the year is upon us, at least so they say, and nothing will please your sweetheart more this Valentine’s Day than a special bottle of wine that celebrates love and family. Here are six bottles that are sure to please. #Cheers
The Veuve Clicquot Champagne House was founded by Phillippe Clicquot-Muiron in 1772. However, the love story that would create one of the most well-known sparkling wine producers today took place between Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin and her husband, the company’s heir, François. François dies only seven years after the couple married, leaving the winery in Barbe-Nicole’s hands. Veuve Clicquot means widow Clicquot. Though widowed at the age of 27, Barbe-Nicole took the reigns, transforming the winery with innovation, creating the first single-vintage Champagne in 1810.
Today, the yellow-labeled Champagne is one of the most recognized brands in the world. And, as fresh and delicious as the Brut wine is, we absolutely adore Veuve Clicquot’s Brut Rosé Champagne, especially on Valentine’s Day. The wine was first introduced in 1818 and was the first Champagne to use red wine grapes to alter the wine’s color while enhancing the flavor. Today, the blend includes 50% Pinot Noir, 30 % Chardonnay, and 20 % Meunier, completed with Pinot Noir red wine revealing juicy red apple, red berry, tangerine, honeysuckle, and yeasty biscuit flavors.
Chappellet Winery was founded on Napa Valley’s Pritchard Hill in 1967 by Molly and Donn Chappellet. Donn took on the role of winemaker while Molly helped raise their six children while designing the aesthetic of the winery’s gardens, putting her artistic stamp on the estate. The first commercial vintage of the winery’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in 1969 received a 100-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the quality of mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, today crafted by well-respected Napa Valley winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus. The wine has an earthy, graphite note that melds with black cherry, currant, plum, toasted spice, dried leather, and tobacco. The tannins are crunchy and well-integrated, making this a wine that can age for many years or enjoy now after allowing it some time to breathe.
Jess Jackson was an American winemaking visionary who was sadly lost his battle with cancer at the age of 81, several decades after founding his iconic winery, Kendall-Jackson. Still, before his passing, Jackson lived a long, full life thanks in part to his second wife and business partner, Barbara Banke. The duo helped make wines like Kendall-Jackson Vintners Reserve Chardonnay and La Crema Pinot Noir into a household name with wine-loving Americans. Today, the still family-owned Jackson Family Wines, with Banke leading the company as Chairman, owns 50,000 acres of land in the United States, selling over 6 million cases a year across its vast array of wine brands. Kendall-Jackson Estates Collection Santa Barbara County Syrah is a rich, ripe, and full-bodied red wine with layers of blackberry, black cherry, wild herbs, and spice, perfect for pairing with grilled lamb shanks.
Bill and Liz Armstrong found more than just beauty when they purchased their York Mountain estate in Paso Robles; they also discovered a site that is its own sub-AVA due to the unique terroir of the rocky, mountainous region producing high quality, expressive fruit with character. The couple met in college while attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Liz always wanted a ranch estate, and though Texas has a lot of ranch land, the couple looked west instead, creating Epoch Estate Winery, one of the finest wineries in California. Epoch York Mountain Viognier shines as an example of the winery’s quality. Juicy, fresh, and well-rounded, showing excellent stone fruit, tropical fruit, and toasted spice flavors that meld with clean, fresh, mouthwatering acidity lifting the palate and cutting through the variety’s natural richness.
Bodegas Monteabellón leans into its rich history of growing grapes in Spain for generations, though the family winery was only founded in 2002. Their story focuses on authenticity, showcasing regional diversity in its wines produced in Ribera del Duero, Rioja, and Rueda. Monteabellón 14 Meses Crianza from Ribera del Duero shines as a terroir-driven example of quality Tempranillo from the region. The wine shows luscious layers of ripe red berries, candied cherry, clove, allspice, and wildflowers. It is ideal for pairing with a rich stew, roasted game meat, or a charcuterie board with aged manchego and Jamon Iberico.
