It has been a long, hot, busy summer. Between a few getaways, lots of Tasting Table writing, and other work, I took a small hiatus from RWWB. However, we have still been sipping some fantastic wines, including the eight stellar whites included in today’s post. Sunny and bright, these selections are fresh, juicy, and balanced. Their palates are refreshing enough to quench your thirst through the end of the season’s warm days and rich and juicy enough to pair with the autumnal flavors of fall. #Cheers!
Bubbles are delightful any day and any time of year. From Cava to Prosecco to Champagne to the wide variety of sparkling wines produced around the world, the variety of flavor profiles is endless, from bone dry to syrupy sweet. The Alsace region of France crafts stellar traditional method sparklers from the region’s cool climate varieties. Domaine Amelie & Charles Sparr Celebration Cremant d’Alsace is bright, fresh, and refined. The Pinot Blanc sparkling wine comes from biodynamically farmed vineyards within Wettolsheim. Owners Amelie and Charles Sparr are both from Alsace wine families who grew up in the vineyards surrounded by the winemaking culture they now embrace with their winery. The wine shines with luscious golden apple, marzipan, honey, and citrus. The palate is rich and complex, with bright freshness that lingers on the palate.
The pedigree of Spottswoode’s St. Helena vineyard in Napa Valley is undeniable. Since 1972, the Novack family has been farming the land with a sustainable focus, transitioning to organic farming in 1985. In 1992, the estate received CCOF organic certification. The estate’s history dates back to 1882 when the original owners, the Schonewalds, planted the first vines on the property. Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc has been a part of the Novack’s wine portfolio since 1985. The wine ferments in a mix of French oak, small stainless steel barrels, clay amphora, and ceramic and concrete. Each vessel adds texture, richness, and depth of character to the exceptional wine. The wine includes fruit from Napa and Sonoma County, including 5% Semillon, bringing a hint of beeswax and lemon balm to the mineral and citrus-driven wine with herbaceous garrigue notes.
Nestled at the entrance to Sonoma County within the Carneros region, Ram’s Gate Winery crafts elegant selections from vineyards throughout Sonoma, including fruit from its Carneros estate. Ram’s Gate Estate Pinot Blanc shines with delicate refinement and elegance, delivering an Old World style from New World fruit. The influence of the San Pablo Bay, bringing cooling breezes with foggy mornings and evenings, keeps fruit bright with crisp acidity, while warm, sunshine-filled days during the growing season ripen the fruit to juicy perfection. The wine has a beautiful texture that coats the palate, enhanced by using a mix of French oak and Hungarian oak with stainless steel during fermentation. Flavors of green apple, pear, wildflowers, and a touch of spice mingle with juicy citrus, creating a compelling taste profile.
Ramón Bilbao’s refreshing Early Harvest Rueda Verdejos comes from grapes that are handpicked from the estate’s Finca Las Amedias vineyard. The region’s sun-drenched summer days throughout the growing season produce fruit that is juicy, bright, and highly aromatic. It layers flavors of tart and sweet green apple, citrus blossom, grassy herbaceous notes, and a touch of crushed stone. The wine ages briefly in concrete vats, preserving the wine’s natural freshness while helping round out the flavors. It is a stellar, low alcohol wine to sip poolside or beachside, but can match equally well with light pasta dishes, vegetarian fare, or fresh seafood.
The Tempranillo wines from Rioja are hailed to be some of the best representations of the variety in the world. However, the region does not only grow red varieties. The white grape, Viura, also thrives in the area. The variety, also known as Macabeo, is one of the main grapes in the production of Spain’s sparkling Cava wines. Ontanon Viura Rioja showcases the variety without bubbles, allowing the richness of the fruit to come through. High elevation vineyards keep the fruit cool throughout the growing season, allowing the natural freshness of the fruit to shine. Aging the wine on the lees (yeast strains) for a short period in American oak casks gives complexity, texture, and an unctuous character to the wine. The oak also adds a touch of creaminess and toasty hazelnut. These flavors meld with white flowers, white pepper, golden melon, and ripe citrus, delivering a wine with a full, well-balanced mouthfeel.
There is something magical when one person’s dream mixes with another’s history. The story of Crimson Lane Vineyards brings these two together, wrapping the hope and passion to craft expressive, authentic wines with character with a family history and hard-working determination to do just that. Tom Herrity was the dreamer; his wife, Deanna Fioresi, and her winemaker brother Dominic grew up in a family of Italian immigrants whose family has been making wine for generations. After years of searching for the perfect spot to bring their dream to life, they discovered a piece of land on Crimson Lane in Linden, Virginia. Crimson Lane Sauvignon Blanc is bright and zesty, with juicy fruit-forward flavors that make the mouth water. Ripe melon, green apple, and lemon zest flavors meld with herbaceous grassiness. A touch of crushed stone minerality keeps the palate interesting and fresh.
France’s Loire Valley produces some of the finest Sauvignon Blancs in the world from regions including Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. The silex/flint stone soils give the wines a hint of smokiness, along with a definitive mineral-driven character. Napa’s Robert Mondavi Winery displays this style of Sauvignon Blanc with its Estate Fume Blanc white wine. The wine blends a touch of Semillon with the Sauvignon Blanc from its Oakville, Napa, estate, giving a creamy texture to the bright wine. The wine opens with notes of white flowers, stone fruit, and ripe melon with lemon zest, green apple, and crushed stone. Barrel fermenting and aging the wine for eight months in partially new French oak adds creamy richness and weight to the inviting palate, making this a wine to sip from now through the colder months.
From volcanic soils on the island of Sicily, Stemmari crafts is sunshine-filled white Grillo wine. Following sustainable practices, with an eye on the environment, the winery showcases the authenticity of the Italian island terroir. Its Grillo wine delivers tropical flavors of mango, pineapple, and papaya with fresh white flowers, soft herbs, and a touch of minerality. Aging the wine on the lees for several months brings texture to the wine, while adding a subtle creaminess to the palate, giving the wine a lingering finish, while keeping the overall palate fresh and inviting.
Welcome back. Don’t stay away too long.
