For 24 years Gary reviewed films for WFAA-TV here in Dallas…that meant he saw a lot of films…a lot…around 400 a year…. Since he left this time last year to start Lascaux Films our movie nights focus on films we really want to see, preferably with a glass of Chardonnay and some popcorn (the perfect combo), with our favorite theaters either being The Magnolia, the refurbished Highland Park Theater and The Studio Movie Grill. We love the first two, but are usually limited to Indy films and documentaries, or very kid friendly films, which means our usually movie outing is to The Studio Movie Grill, with a bottle of Coppola Chardonnay taking the top spot for the best wine on the list.
Last weekend 50/50 was on the to see list. As we are walking into the theater with our Studio Movie Grill menu in hand I notice something different…the whole menu has been updated to include a whole slew of healthy snack options, candy (Gary was very excited about that one) and a new cocktail and wine list. And not any wine list…Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cab, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis, Sterling Chardonnay…and a whole section of new specialty drinks. We chose a Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay for the film, along with super hot popcorn. Karia is Greek for graceful, which describes this wine beautifully. Buttery and rich with balanced acidity filled with green apple, ripe pears and tropical fruit. A great wine to start an evening, or sip throughout the night…especially with super hot, fresh popcorn. And the film – funny, smart and sincere….a film about cancer that isn’t depressing, thanks to the great performances of Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
