Colorado may not be the state you think of when considering buying a bottle of wine. However, The Ordinary Fellow Wines team is determined to place the state at the top of your mind regarding wine.
Crafting expressive selections from high-elevation fruit grown in Southwest Colorado and select areas of Washington, the winery proves that Colorado is a stellar place to grow grapes. Their Box Bar Vineyard sits at 6300 feet above sea level elevation in the foothills of Colorado’s Ute Mountain. Here, daytime temperatures can meet and exceed the mid-90s during the growing season, ensuring grapes can fully ripen with ease. Still, everything changes at night, with a dramatic diurnal shift dropping upwards of 40 degrees Fahrenheit, locking in acidity and freshness. The combination creates an idyllic environment for a winemaker as resulting fruit is balanced with tension and complexity.
Ordinary Fellow Cabernet Sauvignon showcases these characteristics, producing a cool-climate, mountain-fruit style that reminds us of some South American options grown in the foothills of the Andes. The wine has classic cherry, berry, and cassis notes that we would expect from Cabernet. There is also an earthy, herbaceous note with crushed stone minerality delivering a harmonious flavor. The thing we love most is the texture of the wine as the tannin is nicely incorporated, creating a smooth, velvety finish. Pair with grilled steaks, pork chops, or slow braised chicken.
