Do you know the one thing we love more than a good bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon? A good bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon that gives back. For the past 15 years J. Lohr Winery has made a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for breast cancer research and education for every bottle of their Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon sold through a program the winery calls Touching Lives. The Paso Roble winery’s matriarch, Carol Waldorf Lohr, passed away from complications from breast cancer. It is the winery’s goal to advocate for early detection self-care through the program.
Though the winery’s home is Paso Robles, Carol’s Vineyard is in the St. Helena sub-appelation of Napa Valley. With gravely sandy soils, the sustainably farmed vineyard is planted to 27 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and just over four acres of Petit Verdot. Each year, the fruit from this vineyard produces a luscious, velvety, smooth, enticing valley floor Cabernet Sauvignon with character. On the open, the wine leads with aromas of wild berries, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cocoa. These inviting aromas give way to black cherry, espresso, mocha, and dark chocolate flavors. The tannins are lush and nicely integrated, balanced with a note of acidity, keeping the wine bright and engaging. Pair with a roasted tenderloin of beef or a coffee-crusted ribeye.
