Toasting with Tequila for Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo, a very American holiday celebrating Mexico’s 1862 win over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. It is a day to raise a glass of your favorite libation, and in honor of Mexico’s signature liquor, it will be tequila. Bonus, as this year’s holiday falls over the weekend, on a relaxing Sunday Funday, you can toast with two drinks instead of one. #Cheers

A portion of every bottle of Matthew and Camila Macconaghy’s new tequila, Pantalones, is donated to non-profits doing good work to protect the environment. For that, we say alright, alright, alright. The Oscar-winning actor and his wife began the 100% organic Blue Weber agave-based tequila in the fall of 2023, working with 4th generation agave farmers. In the sea of tequilas on the market, a liquor category that continues to grow and thrive, we find Pantalones approach to be refreshing and the product to be incredibly flavorful. Available in the traditional Blanco, reposado, and anejo styles, the Blanco shows the classic notes of sweet agave, soft herbs, and citrus. I will happily mix this into a margarita any day of the week.

It is hard not to love everything Dwayne Johnson touches. His films are entertaining, his football teams are incredibly hard workers, and his Teremana tequila is delicious, capturing his love for the earth, its people, and his gratitude. Concepts we, too, embrace. Teremana is crafting its tequila in the Highlands of Jalisco, where agave plants are brick oven-roasted for three days in the traditional manner before the plants are pressed and the juices are extracted. After fermentation, the spirit is distilled in small batches, copper pot stills to ensure the finest quality is achieved with a smooth, rich palate. The Teremana Blanco tequila uses only 100% Blue Weber agave plants, creating a fresh, lively spirit layering floral, herbal, citrus, and earth notes that meld perfectly in a grapefruit and basil tequila-tini.

Cristalino tequila is an aged tequila that lacks the characteristic golden hue that wood barrel aging gives to the spirit without removing all of the rich, toasty flavors barrel agings provides. The name means crystalline or clear in Spanish and is crafted using reposado or anejo tequila that is filtered, typically using charcoal, to remove the color. The filtration also softens the woody notes, creating a balanced, multi-layered product with character. As the tequila is made using a well-aged-in-barrel product, the price for a Cristalino is typically expensive and definitely more expensive than a Blanco or Silver tequila, even though the two enjoy the same color, or rather, lack of color. For the production style and approachability, Cazadores Cristalino tequila is a steal. Where other brands can cost several hundred to several thousand dollars for their Cristalino, Cazadores’s two-year-aged liquor costs around $40 a bottle. Though aged two years, the aromas are surprisingly fresh, with notes of sweet agave and vanilla. These flavors meld with creamy butterscotch, warm spice, and an earthy floral note.

For fans of flavored tequila, Dulce Vida Pineapple Jalapeno Tequila packs a punch of sweetness with a kick of heat. Crafted using sustainable production methods from blue agave, it is first distilled and then infused with the sweet heat of real pineapple and jalapeno. Where some flavored liquors can come across as overly sweet and cloying, Dulce Vida achieves a nice balance thanks to the spice the pepper brings to the fruity flavors. Use it in your favorite spicy margarita recipes, or mix it on its own with sparkling seltzer with a squeeze of lime for a refreshing summer cocktail.

We love the convenience of pre-made, ready-to-drink cocktails. And we aren’t the only ones, as RTDs, as they are called, are the other fastest-growing liquor category in the country, according to IWSR (International Wine and Spirits Research). We also appreciate using production methods that are naturally good for the environment, as Dulce Vida also offers a line of new RTD cocktails in a compostable paper carton. The cocktails are available in a mix of flavors using a base of tequila, including Paloma, watermelon margarita, and classic margarita. The margarita delivers layers of fresh lime, sweet agave, and orange citrus with a thirst-quenching flavor.

Talkhouse Encore provides everything you want in a well-rounded, ready-to-drink cocktail with consistent quality and flavor. Inspired by a dive bar in East Long Island, and the music that is always playing there, the brand’s Blood Orange Tequila Soda cocktail and Grapefruit Tequila Soda cocktail are both refreshing, juicy, and zesty, highlighting a pop of citrus while bringing in a balanced floral, herbal tequila note. Both boast a moderate 5% alcohol, allowing you to easily enjoy more than one in moderation. They call it happiness in a can, we call it delicious.
