The joy of Christmas is upon us. It is the time to raise a glass with the people you love the most. And, as fitting, you want what is in that glass to be as remarkable as the people who will be drinking it. Here are five wines from California’s glorious Napa Valley that are sure to please even the most discerning palate. #Cheers
You know, I always love a bubble, and Domaine Carneros is consistently one of my favorite producers. The wines always deliver, whether it’s their vibrant bubbles or their well-crafted, non-sparkling Pinot Noir or Rosé. For an occasion like Christmas, opt for either their uber-luxurious Le Rêve Brut Sparkling Wine or more affordable Brut. Either will provide vibrancy and richness, with their Brut having a lighter, fresher palate, while Le Rêve brings the richness that aging over a long period in the bottle en tirage brings. Or, opt for both, beginning your evening with the Brut and a creamy, buttery soft cheese, like Point Reyes Toma, before moving on to pairing Le Rêve with roast chicken or seared scallops in a buerre blanc sauce.
From Napa’s Rutherford District, Inglenook showcases how luxurious a Sauvignon Blanc can be with its refreshing selection. Sandy-loam soils of the estate’s lower vineyard have proven to be the ideal place for growing the white wine variety. While Sauvignon Blanc is the primary grape variety, the wine also includes 24% Semillon, adding weight and richness. Aging in a combination of new and neutral French oak, along with stainless steel, lends texture and creaminess to the palate. The resulting wine has inviting aromas of citrus blossom, gooseberry, and fresh grass, with golden citrus, beeswax, vanilla cream, and fresh herbal flavors.
Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay is a white wine I could drink daily if only my budget would allow it. Since the first time I tried this wine, likely 20 years ago at this point, I have loved this wine. With a long and storied history, the wine showcases richness, acidity, texture, and tension, proving itself an ageworthy white that is also delicious right after release. With zesty freshness and a lean mineral note, the wine shows layers of ripe orchard fruit, citrus blossom, crushed stone, and crisp green apple. Enjoy this wine with creamy triple-cream brie, roasted poultry, or light pasta dishes.
When we think of Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon is top of mind. Within the Stags Leap District, Cliff Lede Vineyards crafts a range of wines, including both estate wines and fruit blends from throughout the valley. Cliff Lede Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon brings fruit from Cliff Lede’s Stags Leap District and Calistoga estate vineyards, with grapes from grower sites in Oakville, Rutherford, and Howell Mountain. The combination ensures the wine has richness, with texture and balance. The wine ages for 21 months in French oak, of which 72% is new. The result after an extended maceration, fermentation, and aging is a Cabernet Sauvignon with layers of ripe cherries, currants, and figs, melding with dark chocolate, vanilla, and espresso. The palate is rich and round, with a lingering finish that is ideal with a grilled ribeye or braised short ribs.
Nickel & Nickle John C. Sullenger Cabernet Sauvignon is opulent, elegant, and delicious, showcasing the best of the Oakville District. Located behind the winery, the home estate vineyard’s base is clay and loam, with a moderate climate that helps create a long, even growing season. The wine ages in a mix of new and once-used French oak for 18 months, helping round out its flavors and creating velvety, chewy tannins. Aromas of black cherry, purple flowers, and spice invite you in, followed by rich black fruit, mocha, leather, and pencil lead notes, with hints of warm spice and cedar.
