I have often said the beauty of the beautiful California region of Paso Robles is the ability to grow so many different varieties from classic Bordeaux to robust Rhone to California favorites like Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. J Lohr showcases this with their extensive portfolio of wines, particularly in their vineyard series.
One of the latest releases from this series is the J Lohr Tower Road Petite Sirah ($35.) Petite Sirah has a tendency to be very powerful and bold, but the Tower Road Vineyard, in Paso’s Estrella district with clay soils, is ideal for growing Petite Sirah. Very hot, sunshine-filled summer days are cooled through the evening thanks to gentle breezes blowing in from Monterey and the Templeton Gap, sometimes creating temperature swings of up to 50 degrees from day into night. This ensures ripe fruit has freshness, a key trait needed in great wine. The wine has a lovely structure and concentration, melding ripe red plum, black cherry, and tart cranberry with toasted spice, roasted hazelnut, and fresh lilac. #Cheers
