Any time I get to spend with Gary brings me ultimate joy, but getting to do TV with him might be the most fun. Monday I had a chance to visit his Texas Daily News set to talk a little holiday wine pairing with Gary and his co-hosts Jeff Brady and Jolene DeVito. I walked through a few of my favorites and their ideal pairing accompaniment – take a look here for the segment.
For a little bit more about each wine, follow the jump for more.
Miner Napa Valley Chardonnay – Classic Napa Valley Chardonnay from one of our favorite producers in the valley. Crisp, fresh and lively with lemon peel, floral honeysuckle and a touch of creaminess, perfect for pairing with anything from salads to shellfish to roasted chicken. A great wine for about $30 a bottle, available at Sigel’s.
Bressia Profundo Malbec blend – Walter Bressia is one of my favorite producers in Argentina, helping take traditional Argentine Malbec to the international stage. His Profundo, meaning “profound” in Spanish blends robust yet refined, earthy Mendoza Malbec with licorice and cherry filled Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Syrah for a bold wine perfect for pairing with grilled meat, wild game and hearty pasta dishes. About $35 a bottle, available at Spec’s.
Siduri Pisoni Pinot Noir – The dynamic husband and wife team of Adam and Dianna Lee have proved that tenacity, dedication and a great palate are all you need to have to make dreams come true. The Texas couple with a dream to make great Pinot Noir in California today produce incredible wine from high quality vineyards throughout the state. They are also a great friend to me and Gary and to Dallas Uncorked, helping sponsor our June Jones Foundation dinner a few years ago. Their Russian River Pinot Noir was just poured throughout the holidays at the White House, and this one…their Pisoni, shows how California Pinot Noir can be lush, elegant and balanced, perfect for grilled salmon, roasted pork tenderloin, duck, quail or turkey with cranberry sauce. About $50 a bottle, available at Spec’s.
Sbragia La Pomessa Zinfandel – Ed Sbragia made a name for himself as winemaker for Beringer for many years. When he stepped down from Beringer he and his son created Sbragia Vineyards, to honor his father and his family name. Today they make stellar, spicy Dry Creek Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon with personality. Their La Pomessa fills the palate with spicy, a touch of smokiness, ripe red fruit and blackberry jam, great for serving with beef, hearty Italian dishes, smoked turkey or pork belly. About $48, available via http://www.sbragia.com and select Spec’s locations.
Rocca Vespera Cabernet Sauvignon Blend – Rocca Family Vineyards wines are some of the finest in Napa Valley, created from grapes grown on the winery estates in Yountville and Coombsville. Also great friends of ours and of Dallas Uncorked, helping us with a sponsorship for our Harvest Dinner a few years ago. Their Vespera blends Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Sirah, Petit Verdot and a touch of Syrah for a bold, interesting and vibrant wine with great character, perfect on its own or paired with lamb or beef, even smoked salmon or smoky grilled vegetables. About $50, available here.
