Viva La France! Happy Bastille Day!!! Raise a glass to our friends across the pond in the land of brie, Bordeaux, and baguettes. As you are considering what to enjoy this celebration day, consider a dry white wine from Bordeaux’s Sauternes region. Though known for their sublime stickies, gorgeous still, non-sweet white wines also shine from historic vineyards, like those of Clos de Lunes.

Oliver Bernard and his Domaine de Chevalier team, including his son Hugo, made a commitment several years ago to revive and celebrate the wines of the ancient Clos des Lunes vineyard in Sauternes, with the goal to produce some of the finest white wines in Bordeaux.
They were already doing this with his Pessac-Leognan red Bordeaux and knew that the deep gravel soils of the Clos des Lunes vineyard in Sauternes were ideally suited for textured, refined, expressive white wines.
With a hands-off approach, allowing the true nuances of the varieties to shine the winery is now producing fresh, balanced, and refined dry and sweet wines from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc vines averaging 35 years in age.
Blending 70% Semillon with 30% Sauvignon Blanc, Clos de Lunes Lune d’Argent ($20) opens with aromas of honeysuckle, peach blossom, and Meyer lemon, followed by layers of ripe orchard and stone fruit, lemon zest, spicy ginger, golden honey, and the slightest hint of creamy lemon curd thanks to a touch of aging in French oak. Medium-bodied with structure and lively character, there is a richness without being overbearing. A perfect wine to consider if enjoying the rich and creamy cheeses of the country, roasted chicken or white fish, even something simple like roasted almonds or hot, buttered baguette with truffles.
