From Sonoma’s Los Carneros region, Ram’s Gate Estate Chardonnay ($76) shines with refinement and style. Juicy and lush, thanks to sunshine-filled days ensuring fruit reaches ideal ripeness, balanced seamlessly with bright acidity, thanks to cooling winds that blow through the vineyards off San Pablo Bay. Utilizing a combination of Chardonnay clones, including California favorite, Wente as the dominant clone in the blend, and aging the wine in primarily neutral French oak for 11 months, the wine has an inviting elegance revealing aromas of orange blossom and lemon leaf, white flowers, and spice, followed by flavors of lemon curd, lychee, golden apple, blanched almond, and nutmeg. The perfect wine with poached lobster or lump crab cakes.
From Anderson Valley, FEL Savoy Vineyard Chardonnay ($52) reveals a structured complexity while delivering exquisite subtlety with delectable charm. From the historic Savoy Vineyard, which enjoys an idyllic maritime influence to keep freshness within the fruit, the citrus and orchard fruit-filled wine reveals aromas of apple blossom and lemon zest, followed by a palate rich with ripe pear, apple, lemon balm, with a mineral note that melds with a yeasty brioche and fresh cream note thanks to 18 months of sur lie (aging on the lees/yeasts. From the Napa side of Los Carneros, Mathew Bruno Carneros Chardonnay ($38) is sourced from two of the region’s prime vineyards, the Baldacci Family’s Honey B Vineyard and Beckstoffer’s Carneros Lake Vineyard, both delivering impeccably pedigreed, gorgeous fruit. The supple wine undergoes partial barrel fermentation, complete malolactic fermentation, followed by nine months of sur lie aging in new French and American oak. This is a rich, textured wine, that also has a lovely bright note of acidity, keeping everything balanced, perfect to enjoy with roasted chicken or game, but could also stand up to heavier savory dishes.
