On the edge of Green Valley, a sub-AVA of the Russian River Valley, where morning fog rests over delicate vineyards well into the afternoon, the Martinelli family farms a former apple orchard turned vineyard for Benovia Winery. The site was farmed for apples for generations, with those sweet golden apple notes carrying through in the crisp, zesty Chardonnay produced by Benovia today. Benovia celebrates the vineyard naming the wine La Pommeraie or “apple” in French to pay homage to the site.
Benovia La Pommeraie Chardonnay ($55) reveals luscious, layered, fruit-forward notes of roasted apple and pear tart, tropical guava and lychee, subtle honey, creamy custard, and toast. There is definitely a richness to the wine, but it isn’t overwhelming; it is inviting, with a wet stone mineral note and enough freshness and acidity to ensure the wine remains balanced. A perfect wine with roasted chicken, poached lobster, or fresh pasta with a creamy lemon sauce. #cheers
